Man from Galway, New York, Charged with Cyberstalking Slain UnitedHealthcare CEO's Family

Shane Daley, a 40-year-old resident of Galway, New York, has been arrested and charged with cyberstalking a family member of Brian Thompson, the late CEO of UnitedHealthcare. The harassment began just hours after Thompson was fatally shot in New York City on December 4, 2024.

Thompson was gunned down at around 6:44 a.m. on Sixth Avenue, near the New York Hilton Midtown. Luigi Mangione, who is currently awaiting trial for the murder, was arrested on Dec. 9 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and brought back to New York City.

Daley is accused of sending harassing and threatening voicemail messages to a family member of Thompson. In these messages, Daley used threatening and harassing language that focused on Thompson's killing, expressed satisfaction over the fact and manner of his death, and stated that Thompson's children deserved to meet the same violent end. The menacing calls were made from Dec. 4 to Dec. 7.

Federal prosecutors in Albany are handling the case against Daley. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison, fines, and supervised release. Authorities, including the FBI and U.S. Attorneys, have condemned his actions as callous and threatening against a grieving family already suffering from a tragic loss.

Daley was released from custody under GPS monitoring and prohibitions against possessing firearms or consuming alcohol. Samuel Breslin, Daley's attorney, declined comment. No new information about Daley's current location was provided in the article.

The harassment began just hours after Thompson's murder, with Daley allegedly placing multiple threatening phone calls and leaving profane, hostile voicemails to the family member. Thompson's slaying sparked waves of callous praise online immediately after the shooting. Mangione is facing both state and federal charges.

Additional conditions of Daley's release are expected to be added. Daley is scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday afternoon. Reports indicate Daley has also threatened ICE agents in an unrelated matter. No one picked up the phone on Wednesday afternoon at publicly listed phone numbers for Daley and his parents.
