Individual under arrest for harassing family member of the late UnitedHealthcare CEO through cyber means

A New York man, Shane Daley, aged 40 from Galway, New York, has been charged with cyberstalking a family member of the slain former UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The charges come after Daley allegedly left multiple threatening and harassing voicemails between December 4 and 7, 2024, just hours after Thompson was fatally shot.

The messages purportedly expressed satisfaction about the killing and threatened similar harm to Thompson’s family, including his children. The criminal complaint states Daley called a work phone number used by a family member, reportedly Thompson’s wife, leaving messages with hostile language accusing Thompson of profiting off poor Americans and saying the victim's children deserved the same fate as their father.

Luigi Mangione, currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York, awaiting trial, is accused of stalking Thompson outside the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan and then shooting him to death on Dec. 4, 2024. Mangione allegedly targeted Thompson for his role at UnitedHealthcare. The alleged cyberstalking involved four threatening voicemails left over multiple days, with one of the messages, left on Dec. 4, 2024, the same day of Thompson's killing, containing the statement, "Your [family member] got lit the f--- up cause he's a f------ asshole."

Acting U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III accused Mangione of gleefully increasing the Thompson family's pain and suffering. Daley's voicemails also contained threats of violence and death, wishing harm upon Thompson's family and their children. In another voicemail, Daley allegedly shared a hostile message that Thompson's family member should tell his children, stating, "Their dad died cause he was a f------ capitalist."

The shooting of Thompson occurred in the middle of New York City and gained national attention. Mangione has been indicted on federal charges for the shooting. In another development, Shane Daley has been charged with cyberstalking a family member of the slain CEO. His arraignment took place in Albany federal court, with conditions for release requiring location monitoring and his return to court for further proceedings.

The authorities are actively investigating both the murder case and the cyberstalking case, emphasizing that these harmful acts threaten public safety and will not be tolerated. Federal prosecutors and the FBI are working together to hold Mangione and Daley accountable for their actions.
