Brewery Chat: Discussion of Government Overthrow With Ex-Military Officer

Discussion About Potential Government Overthrow Heard in Beer Garden - Individual Testifies to Private Discussion About Alleged Government Overthrow, Held in a Biergarten

Here's a juicy tidbit that's been making waves: a former Bundeswehr soldier and alleged "Reichsbürger" member, Maximilian Eder, reportedly had a discussion regarding a violent government overthrow with a former Lieutenant General of the Bundeswehr in a Bavarian beer garden.

During their 2021 meetup, Eder allegedly urged the witness to put away his phone, then began criticizing the federal government, expounding on theories about the removal or assassination of specific officials, such as former Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn.

The witness also claimed that Eder had plans for him in the event of a government change, with the Ministry of Defense being reorganized and the witness playing a pivotal role. The witness took it upon himself to contact the military security service the day after, citing Eder's actions as requiring attention due to the potential danger of his schemes.

These two had known each other since 1990, having attended a general staff course together in the Bundeswehr. But their views diverged, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the witness aligning with mainstream opinions and Eder developing unique perspectives on handling the crisis.

When describing Eder, the witness referred to him as an impassioned individual with a penchant for wishful thinking rather than rational solutions.

The federal prosecutor alleges that Eder was among the founding members of the association, conspiring with others to overthrow the government through force. He is also accused of reaching out to active Bundeswehr soldiers to rally them to the cause and drafting a declaration for the removal of the federal government in January 2022.

Nine defendants, including Eder, are on trial in Frankfurt for being members of or supporting a terrorist organization, aiming to replace the existing order with their own versions through violent upheaval.

Overall, 26 alleged conspirators are facing charges in parallel trials in Munich and Stuttgart. The presumption of innocence remains for the accused until the verdict, which will be announced on May 13 in Frankfurt.
