In a recent development, the U.S. Department of Justice has closed its investigation into Community Capital Partners, the development group behind the controversial multi-purpose development, EPIC City. However, Governor Greg Abbott's office has yet to respond to queries regarding this matter.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, the Sufaraa Center, a learning center offering classes and events centered around the teachings of Islam in McKinney, has seen an increased police presence. Last week, a man walked into the center after repeatedly ringing the building's doorbell, making remarks such as 'there should be no mosques in the USA,' without permission.

The McKinney Police Department is maintaining direct communication with Sufaraa Center leadership, and the police presence is framed as a broader effort to safeguard all residents. The identity of the man involved in the incident has not been publicly disclosed.

The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has linked this incident to comments made by Governor Abbott, particularly his repeated references to EPIC City as a potential 'Sharia compound' and his signing of House Bill 4211 last week. The bill, which targets EPIC City, does not mention Islam or Sharia Law explicitly, and Abbott has stated that the bill applies to other religions as well.

EPIC, on the other hand, maintains that the investigations into their development stem from religious bias. CAIR Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter Executive Director Mustafaa Carroll believes that such hate incidents can be tied to the Islamophobic statements and policies of Governor Abbott and other state officials.

It's important to note that a state investigation into housing discrimination was settled by the Texas Workforce Commission Tuesday, but no details about the case have been released. Other groups' investigations into EPIC City are still ongoing.

KERA News reached out to Abbott's office for a response, but no response has been provided yet. In the past, Abbott has referred to CAIR as an 'antisemitic hate group.'

As the situation unfolds, the community continues to watch closely, hoping for a resolution that upholds the principles of fairness, respect, and equal treatment for all.
