Bullhornin' Back on Anti-Semitism: Wolfram Weimer Takes a Swing for Change

Individual Seeks to Combat Anti-Semitism: Wolfram Weimer's Crusade

No mincing words, Wolfram Weimer's rollin' in hot and heavy. His inaugural tasks? Revamp the cultural scene and tackle anti-Semitism head-on. Just days into his role, Weimer's already makin' waves with a high-profile meeting and a promise to steer us clear of that old, icky, anti-Semitic chapter in German culture.

As the fresh Minister of Culture, Weimer's welcomed the President of the Central Council of Jews, Josef Schuster, for a chinwag on combating anti-Semitism. "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows," Weimer said. "The tension between the BKM and the Jewish community's history ain't got a bright future. Time to heal, partner."

Schuster, in his turn, declared it a "heavyweight sign" of Weimer's dedication. The yakkin' was about crackin' down on the rise of anti-Semitism in Germany, particularly in the arts scene.

Rearview mirror shows the Central Council of Jews criticizin' anti-Semitic representations at last year's documenta in Kassel and quotes about the Gaza war durin' the Berlinale gala. Schuster had demanded clear rules for culture. He'd warned about anti-Semitism creepin' into art and culture like a poisonous vine, threatenin' every step we take.

Weimer's Stance: "Enough's Enough!"

Weimer stormed in, "On bended knee I plead, let's drop the hate speech. Seein' anti-Semites crawlin' outta the shadows these days? Makes my blood boil. The mid-2023 terror attack by Hamas on Israel brought a surge of anti-Semitism. Calls for boycotts of Jewish artists in the cultural sector? Unacceptable. I'll stand right beside ya, fightin' till the bitter end."

Weimer's plannin' to keep regular meetings with Schuster. Besides discussin' a panel to handle restitution of artworks stolen or seized under the Nazis, the Ministry of Culture's agenda includes a reminder of the dark chapters we've got locked away in our past.

Catch us at the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Weimer'll light a candle for the six million Jews slain in the Holocaust, remindin' us of our promise to fight any form of anti-Semitism and never, ever forget.

Makin' some shakeups, Weimer announced his first personnel move on Tuesday: Andreas Gorgens, Weimer's former head of State Ministry for Culture and Media, will be sent packin'. Welcome to the team, Konrad Schmidt-Werthern, Weimer's deputy since the autumn of 2024. Schmidt-Werthern's no stranger to the Ministry of Culture, havin' spent about four jolly years there.

Weimer, known for his independent magazine "Cicero," took the reins yesterday. He replaced the outgoin' Green politician Claudia Roth. The 60-year-old's got an impressive résumé, serve as editor-in-chief for "Die Welt" and "Berliner Morgenpost."
