Individual removes headscarf, instigating physical assault by a group of people on the man
Yesterday afternoon, an incident unfolded in the heart of Neukölln on Sonnenallee, involving a 44-year-old woman who had her headscarf allegedly pulled off by a man.
The initial confrontation took place around 3:15 PM, with a 53-year-old man and his 25-year-old son stepping in to challenge the man's behaviour.
The situation escalated when the suspect, who was found to have a blood alcohol level of 1.6 promille, allegedly struck the 53-year-old on the head with a glass bottle from his shopping bag, causing him a head wound that required hospitalisation.
In a commendable act, an off-duty police officer from the Brennpunkt and Presence Unit of Police Directorate 5 (City) witnessed the assault and intervened. The suspect was arrested by the officer and brought to the ground. However, during the arrest, the suspect kicked the officer in the knee.
The suspect was arrested and found to have minor skin abrasions that did not require treatment. The 25-year-old son of the man who confronted the suspect was not physically harmed in the incident.
Approximately 50 to 60 people gathered at the scene during the incident. The search results do not provide information on the name of the suspect involved in the incident.
The incident has sparked discussions about the ongoing issue of hate crimes in the city, with many calling for increased police presence and community engagement to address such incidents. The police department, for its part, has assured the public that they are actively investigating the case and will take appropriate action.
