Unmasked: Fake Government Job Scams in Mohali and Chandigarh
Individual pretending to be railway official swindles Mohali resident out of ₹69k with false government job offer, arrested
Wanna catch 'em all? Let's dive into the latest scam sweeping through Mohali and Chandigarh!
Meet Sumit Kumar, the Jalandhar mastermind who was cuffed by Mohali cops on Saturday. Why, you ask? Well, this dodgy cat was posing as a high-ranking government official in the railways and fleecing unemployed youth of their hard-earned cash under false promises of lucrative government jobs.
Sidenote: Sumit was found shacking up in Sector 41, Chandigarh, which sounds like a posh ‘hood, but don't get too impressed - this guy's not on the up-and-up.
Take, for instance, Vishal Kumar, a victim from Mataur. A few months back, Sumit waved a juicy offer in front of Vishal and his pals - promising them cushy gigs as drivers and ticket counter operators at the railways. All they had to do was fork over ₹50,000 each. Speaking of which, Vishal threw ₹69,000 at Sumit, but realized later he'd fallen for a forger. Yep, Sumit is known for skimming cash by fabricating documents. Cyber cops launched an investigation and hauled the forgerous fraudster in on the weekend.
In Sumit's pocket, they found a phony certificate proving employment (signed by no one less than Sumit, presumably attempting to pull a fast one as the district magistrate deputy commissioner). The investigation also turned up approximately 25 jobless souls who'd gotten coerced by the sly dog, in addition to a mobile phone and a clandestine pile of fake employment docs for the jobless youth.
The cat is out of the bag now, and authorities have slapped Sumit with charges under Sections 318(4), 336(2), and 336(3) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita at the cyber crime police station.
Now, while the more common frauds in these towns involve shady land scams and administrative corruption, job offer scams aren't unheard of. The prevalence of document fraud and institutional collusion in these areas points to the possibility of such scams. So job-seekers, be wise - verify all job offers through official channels and keep your eyes peeled for sneaky intermediaries.
