Individual Melissa Todorovic, convicted for compelling her partner to murder his former partner, granted temporary freedom during the day
Melissa Todorovic Granted Day Parole After Nearly 17 Years in Prison
In a decision made by the Parole Board, Melissa Todorovic, a woman in her 30s, has been granted day parole for a six-month period. This marks a significant milestone for Todorovic, who was convicted of first-degree murder in 2009 for ordering her then-boyfriend, David Bagshaw, to kill Stefanie Rengel in 2008.
The murder occurred on New Year's Day in Toronto. Rengel, a teenage girl at the time, was the victim. Todorovic grew jealous of Rengel because she had briefly dated Bagshaw years earlier.
Todorovic's parole comes with strict conditions. She must comply with regular check-ins with her probation officer, attend counseling sessions, avoid contact with specific individuals, and refrain from illegal activities. She is also required to report all relationships to her parole supervisor.
The Parole Board's opinion is that Todorovic will not reoffend and will contribute to the protection of society by facilitating her reintegration. This decision was based on Todorovic's good behavior in prison and notable progress.
In 2018, Todorovic was granted six months of day parole, but was brought back to prison early due to involvement in a secret love triangle. However, in 2024, she was granted four 15-day unescorted absences to a halfway house.
This report was first published in September 2025 by The Canadian Press. It's important to note that both Todorovic and Bagshaw were sentenced to life in prison. They are required to observe a nightly curfew, undergo psychological counselling, and adhere to other conditions to ensure their reintegration into society is successful.
