Tragedy at Jindo: A Family's Heart-Wrenching Loss

Individual in South Korea reportedly murders his own kin

Jindo, South Korea (dpa) - In a shocking turn of events, a 49-year-old South Korean man, named Ji, is under suspicion for the gruesome murder of his entire family. Reports from Yonhap, the country's official news agency, reveal that Ji deliberately drove his car into the sea near Jindo Port, leading to the drowning deaths of his wife and their teenage sons.

The heart-wrenching incident unfolded on Sunday, leaving the community in disbelief. After the tragedy, Ji vanished from the scene. However, a concerned teacher, aware of one of the sons' absence from school, reported him missing to the authorities. The police eventually tracked him down and arrested him in Gwangju on Monday evening.

Investigations are currently underway to ascertain the precise circumstances that led to this unfortunate event. The possibility of a murder case is being explored with great scrutiny, and the recovered bodies of the woman and her two sons, along with Ji's vehicle, were discovered on Monday evening.

Financial troubles may have driven Ji to this drastic act, as he allegedly expressed feelings of being overwhelmed by debts totaling approximately 160 million won, a result of wage issues and escalating family expenses [3][4]. An autopsy has been ordered to further understand the exact sequence of events that led to the families' demise.

Ji appeared at the Gwangju District Court for a warrant hearing on June 4, 2025, following his urgent arrest on charges of murder [5]. The hardships Ji endured due to his wife's bipolar disorder and his struggles to make a living added layers of complexity to this tragic story.
