India: Travel Agent Arrested for Fraudulent US Visa Promise
A travel agent in India, Lokesh Jat, has been detained by the police, accused of defrauding a resident of Barwala, Chandigarh, for ₹20 lakh under the false pretext of securing a US visa.
Jat, a resident of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, allegedly orchestrated a deceptive journey for the victim, Dilraj Singh, promising US entry. Over several months, Singh was made to traverse through several Asian countries, including Thailand, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Russia, and Dubai. However, he never managed to gain entry into the US, leading to a complaint filed on September 30, 2024.
During Jat's seven-day police remand, the authorities were able to recover ₹5 lakh of the defrauded amount. Singh claims that after his return to India, Jat made false promises of securing a Canadian visa as an alternative route to the US. But these promises were never fulfilled, and the money was not returned.
The anti-immigration fraud unit of Panchkula police, after a long investigation, apprehended Jat on May 16 in Noida. He is among four suspects implicated in the elaborate scam. Following Jat's remand, he has been sent to judicial custody. The authorities are actively pursuing the three remaining suspects and working to recover the remaining defrauded money.
