Indications suggest that Anthony Richardson may be departing the Colts, hinted by Chris Ballard's covert inquiry about Sam Darnold, seemingly indicating Ballard's strategic plans.
In a surprising turn of events, the Indianapolis Colts have announced that Daniel Jones will be their starting quarterback for the Week 1 game against the Miami Dolphins. This decision, which comes as a shock to both Anthony Richardson and his agent, has cast doubt over Richardson's future with the team.
Initially, Richardson, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, was seen as the franchise quarterback. However, after 2 ½ years, the team's confidence seems to have shifted towards Jones, a more seasoned quarterback.
General Manager Chris Ballard of the Indianapolis Colts made a series of revelations regarding Richardson, indicating that the team is moving in a different direction at quarterback. Despite the setback, Richardson has expressed a mindset of staying ready and growing, indicating that he is still committed to showcasing his value if given the opportunity.
Jones, drafted by the New York Giants at No 6 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, has thrown for 14,582 yards with 70 touchdowns and 47 interceptions since his debut. In the 2021-2022 season, he finished with 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 10 games with the Giants.
Coach Steichen stated that Jones' operation at the line, discernment, checks, protection, and ball placement were factors in the decision. The Colts opted for consistency and accuracy over the youth that Richardson provides.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Richardson might not be leaving the Indianapolis Colts immediately. Chris Ballard believes flushing Richardson out of the team just because others think he should be is not the right approach. Ballard thinks the Indianapolis Colts need to give Richardson every chance to be the best he can be.
