India's Prime Minister, Modi, envisions a nation that is self-sufficient in energy and military sectors - India's Prime Minister, Modi, aims to secure self-reliance in energy and defense sectors
In the ongoing tariff negotiations between India and the US, agriculture has emerged as a significant point of contention. Meanwhile, India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has announced that semiconductor chips made in India will be available on the market by the end of the year, following a ceremony held in New Delhi.
Amidst these developments, Modi has made it clear that he does not intend to submit to the US. He has acknowledged India's current dependence on other countries for meeting its energy needs and aims to change this. Modi has also emphasized the need for self-reliance in the military sector.
The US has been putting pressure on India to halt oil imports from Russia, with threats of increased tariffs if India does not comply. The US President, Donald Trump, has previously threatened to double the tariffs on Indian products to 50 percent if India does not halt oil imports from Russia.
Modi has promised to stand firm in defending the interests of Indian farmers and has called on scientists and engineers to focus on developing key sectors and technologies, including aircraft engines, semiconductor chips, and military hardware systems.
The government is boosting energy self-reliance by launching a National Deepwater Exploration Mission for offshore resources and increasing efforts around critical minerals essential for energy and defense industries. There is also a strategic push towards nuclear energy and green hydrogen, along with clean energy innovations to reduce fossil fuel dependence.
In the defence sector, Modi highlights the need for self-reliance and domestic capability development through initiatives like "Operation Sindoor" and promoting indigenous production of jet engines and other defense technologies. Efforts are also underway to build a comprehensive "national security domain" leveraging advanced technologies.
Modi's administration is driving reforms in GST, digitization, regulatory simplification, and support for startups, especially in frontier sectors like clean energy, quantum technology, battery storage, and advanced materials. These reforms aim to nurture domestic innovation ecosystems and enhance India's competitiveness and export capabilities in high-tech and strategic sectors.
Overall, Modi's approach combines policy reforms, technological innovation, enhanced domestic manufacturing (particularly in defense and energy), and a strategic geopolitical posture aiming for India to become a $10 trillion economy by 2047 with global economic and strategic independence.
