India's potential Asia Cup squad members: Shubman Gill and Axar Patel may vie for vice-captaincy roles; Jasprit Bumrah is slated to participate - Report indicates
India Announces Asia Cup T20 Squad: Yadav Leads Balanced Attack
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the 15-member squad for India's participation in the 2025 Asia Cup T20 tournament. Suryakumar Yadav will captain the team, with Shubman Gill serving as vice-captain.
Jasprit Bumrah is expected to lead the pace attack, with Kuldeep Yadav returning as a left-arm wrist spinner. All-rounders like Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel are also part of the squad.
The squad features promising batsmen such as Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper-batter), Tilak Varma, and Rinku Singh, along with bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana.
Balancing experienced stars with emerging talent remains a key challenge for the selectors. Abhishek Sharma, the world's No. 1 T20 batter, is included in the squad, while Shivam Dube, after a successful comeback against England, is poised to retain his spot.
Sanju Samson had a fantastic season with both bat and gloves, earning him the first-choice wicket-keeper role. Jitesh Sharma, who shone during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL-winning campaign, is listed as backup wicketkeeper-batter.
The main debate centres on the third seamer position, with Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh in contention. The second wicket-keeper slot will be contested between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel.
Notable omissions include Yashasvi Jaiswal and Washington Sundar, who were named reserves but did not make the final 15, reflecting selectors’ choice to manage workloads and squad balance.
This squad reflects a blend of experienced, in-form players and emerging talent aimed at a balanced attack and strong batting lineup for the Asia Cup 2025. The selection hints that this is a step towards a more definitive team for future tournaments, including the T20 World Cup 2026, but not the final World Cup squad.
The Asia Cup T20 tournament is scheduled to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28.
