India's Minister Outlines Five-Point Plan for Responsible AI Governance

AI's rapid growth has brought both benefits and challenges. Recent incidents highlight the need for responsible governance, as facial recognition systems have misidentified minorities at alarming rates, AI hiring tools have discriminated against women, and deepfakes have spread misinformation during elections.

Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, India's Minister of State for Communications, addressed these issues at the International AI Summit 2025. He outlined a five-point framework for responsible AI governance, emphasizing the need to combat bias, protect jobs near me, safeguard privacy, ensure transparency, and lead with ethics. The minister called for a collective response from governments, industries, and citizens.

AI's impact on jobs is also a concern. By 2030, 15 to 30 percent of jobs in IT and manufacturing could face displacement due to automation. Meanwhile, AI misdiagnosed 20 percent of tuberculosis cases in Uttar Pradesh hospitals, underscoring the need for vigilance in healthcare applications.

In positive developments, AI-powered alert systems saved over 500,000 lives during the 2024 Kerala floods. The Department of Telecommunications' AI-driven Fraud Risk Indicator blocked 4.8 million scams and prevented losses of ₹140 crore, demonstrating AI's potential for good.

India is taking steps to strengthen its AI governance, aiming to create a framework for other nations to follow. As AI continues to evolve, so too must our efforts to ensure it is developed and deployed responsibly, protecting both individuals and society as a whole.
