India's Agriculture Booms: Crop Areas Expand, Reservoirs Brim
Agricultural progress in India demonstrates robust growth with expanded crop areas and enhanced reservoir levels. Union Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently reviewed the sector's progress.
The total area under Kharif crops has surged by 6.51 lakh hectares, reaching 1,121.46 lakh hectares. Major Kharif crops like paddy, maize, sugarcane, and pulses have seen higher sowing. Notably, the area under urad (black gram) has expanded by 1.50 lakh hectares. In horticultural crops, there's steady progress with increased sowing areas for onion, potato, and tomato. Tomato cultivation has witnessed the biggest jump, from 1.86 lakh hectares to 2.37 lakh hectares.
Reservoir levels across the country are significantly higher than last year and the ten-year average, ensuring adequate water supply for irrigation and other needs.
The minister reviewed the crop situation in states affected by heavy rains and landslides, ensuring timely assistance. He also instructed officials to ensure smooth fertiliser distribution during the upcoming sowing season. With foodgrain availability stable and reservoir levels high, the agricultural sector looks poised for continued growth.
