Indianapolis Colts designate quarterback Daniel Jones as their starting player
In a move aimed at providing stability and leadership at the quarterback position, the Indianapolis Colts have selected Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback for the 2025 season. The announcement comes after a closely contested competition between Jones and Anthony Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Colts.
Jones, who was the sixth overall pick by the New York Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft, brings a wealth of NFL experience to the Colts. Despite a challenging start to his career marred by injuries and inconsistent play, Jones has proven his ability to manage an offense and make reliable throws. His steady play has been a key factor in the Colts' decision to go with him as their starter.
In contrast, Richardson has shown flashes of athleticism and potential, but his struggles with accuracy and health have raised concerns. In his first two NFL seasons, Richardson has been limited to 15 starts, during which he has been sacked 21 times and committed 12 fumbles. Furthermore, he has suffered injuries to his shoulder, oblique, foot, back, and finger, as well as a concussion.
During the preseason, Jones's performance demonstrated his effectiveness and game management. In one game, he completed 7 of 11 passes for 101 yards, while Richardson managed only 6 of 11 for 73 yards. Colts head coach Shane Steichen emphasized the importance of experience and consistency as reasons for selecting Jones as the starter in a pivotal year for the franchise.
Jones has a solid NFL resume, having started 69 games for the Giants, where he amassed 14,582 passing yards, 70 touchdown passes, and 47 interceptions. Despite a record of 24-44-1 as the Giants' starter, Jones's ability to lead the team and manage the offense was evident.
The Colts will open the 2025 season on September 7 against the visiting Miami Dolphins. Jones signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Colts this offseason, signaling the team's commitment to him as their starting quarterback.
Jones's arrival in Indianapolis marks a new chapter in his NFL career. After requesting to be released from the Giants last November, Jones will have the opportunity to prove himself as a starting quarterback once again. With the Colts, he will be tasked with leading the team to success and bringing a championship to the city of Indianapolis.
