Indianapolis Colts designate Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback, with Anthony Richardson expressing approval for the decision
In a bold move, the Indianapolis Colts have selected Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback for the 2025 season. This decision comes after a close competition with Anthony Richardson, the fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, who has struggled with injuries and accuracy as a passer.
Key reasons for choosing Jones over Richardson include his extensive experience, commanding presence, and the Colts' desire for stability at the quarterback position. Head coach Shane Steichen highlighted Jones' ability to "command the huddle" and "take charge," which were seen as critical qualities to help get teammates in the right position.
Jones, who was the No. 6 overall pick by the New York Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft, brings a wealth of experience to the Colts. He has a career total of 14,582 passing yards, 70 touchdown passes, and 47 interceptions in 70 games (69 starts) as a quarterback. Jones' performance and health concerns compared to Richardson played a significant role in the decision. In recent preseason games, Jones completed 7 of 11 passes for 101 yards, outperforming Richardson’s 6-of-11 for 73 yards.
The Colts are not treating this as a short-term or trial decision; they plan for Jones to be their QB1 for the entire 2025 season, reflecting confidence in his leadership and steadiness. The team's long-term plan is evident in their decision, as they aim to revitalize their offense with Jones at the helm.
Despite Richardson's early struggles, the Colts have not closed the door on his future with the team. Richardson remains the backup quarterback, with a third QB retained as a developmental prospect. Shane Steichen mentioned staying healthy as a factor for Anthony Richardson's continued development with the team.
Daniel Jones had a stint with the Minnesota Vikings in the 2024 season after being released by the New York Giants. However, he did not play in any games with the Vikings in the 2024 season. Jones returned to play as the starting quarterback for a team in the 2024 season following a season-ending ACL tear in 2023. He has also demonstrated his ability as a runner, accumulating 2,179 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns in his career.
The Indianapolis Colts will open the 2025 season on September 7 against the visiting Miami Dolphins. With Jones at the helm, the Colts are poised to make a strong start to the new season.
