Indianapolis Colts Name Daniel Jones as Starting Quarterback for the 2025 Season

The Indianapolis Colts have made a significant move in their quarterback room, with head coach Shane Steichen announcing that Daniel Jones will be the starting quarterback for the upcoming 2025 season [1][2][3]. This decision comes as Anthony Richardson, the Colts' former first-round pick, will now serve as the backup.

Richardson's tenure as the Colts' starter has been limited to 15 games due to injuries, and he has struggled with both accuracy as a passer and staying healthy [3]. In contrast, Jones, who was the No. 6 overall pick by the Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft, has more extensive NFL experience, having played in 70 career games [2].

Steichen cited staying healthy as a factor if Richardson is to continue to develop [2]. However, his decision puts Richardson's future with the Colts in question, as the team may have lost faith in him as their long-term starter.

Jones, who signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Colts in the offseason, suffered a season-ending ACL tear in 2023 but returned to start the 2024 season as the team's No. 1 quarterback [4]. In his career, Jones has completed 59.5% of his passes for 14,730 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions, and has rushed for 2,179 yards with 15 touchdowns [4].

Despite the decision, Richardson's agent, Deiric Jackson, has criticized the Colts following the move, with trust between Richardson and the team reportedly being 'questionable right now' [2]. It remains to be seen whether the Colts will explore a trade for Richardson before the regular season begins or if he will remain on the roster as the backup.

Meanwhile, the Colts will open the 2025 season on September 7 against the visiting Miami Dolphins [1]. Elsewhere, J.J. McCarthy is expected to start at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings in the 2025 season [5].
