Indian Test captain decides to step down amid speculations of impending termination.

Farewell to the Star Batsman! India's Rohit Sharma has bid adieu to Test cricket, effective immediately.

Sayonara, Rohit Sharma!

In an emotional Instagram story on May 7th, Rohit shared his decision, thanking his fans for the unwavering support. With whites as his battle color, he proudly represented India for years.

Making his Test debut in 2013, Rohit's career lightning started with a brilliant 177 against the West Indies at Eden Gardens. Later, in 2022, he was bestowed with the responsibility of Test captain, taking over from the legendary Virat Kohli. He steps away from Test cricket with an impressive record of 67 caps, amassing over 4,000 runs, and leading India to 12 Test victories.

In his last series at Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024, Australia prevailed 3-1 against India. Despite Rohit struggling with a poor form scoring only 31 runs in 5 innings, he dropped himself from the final Test in Sydney.

Retirement—A Result of Speculations?

According to Indian Express, the Indian selectors envision a long-term captain in the forthcoming 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. Recent performances of Rohit cast doubt on his place as captain, putting his position at risk.

Following Rohit's retirement, India must name a new captain for the forthcoming England tour. Current vice-captain, Jasprit Bumrah, receives votes, but emerging star Shubman Gill, the younger candidate, gains support for the captaincy role. As the selection process unfolds, a promising newcomer like Sai Sudharsan might join the squad as a batter.

The Oval will host the first Test on June 20th, while the final Test extends into the first week of August. Stay tuned for all the latest updates!
