Indian Oil's Panipat Refinery Obtains India's First Certification under ISCC for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Manufacturing

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IndianOil) has made history by becoming the first Indian refiner to receive the ISCC CORSIA Certification for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production at its Panipat Refinery. This certification is a significant milestone in India's journey towards a greener and cleaner aviation future.

The ISCC CORSIA certification is a prerequisite for commercial SAF production under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) framework. To obtain this certification, Indian refiners must comply with stringent sustainability and lifecycle carbon emission standards.

IndianOil's SAF production process meets these requirements by using sustainable feedstocks such as used cooking oil (UCO) or ethanol, implementing processes with stringent lifecycle carbon emission reductions, and maintaining transparent and verifiable supply chains aligned with ISCC monitoring and reporting protocols.

The achievement was celebrated at a special ceremony in New Delhi, where M/s Cotecna formally handed over the certification to Mr. A. S. Sahney, Chairman of IndianOil. Senior officials from the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoP&NG), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB) were also present at the event.

With this certification, IndianOil can now produce and commercially sell SAF that complies with international sustainability protocols, opening up access to global aviation fuel markets committed to CORSIA targets. The company has already secured agreements with major airlines like Air India to supply certified SAF, supporting the decarbonization goals of the aviation sector and enhancing its corporate sustainability reputation.

This achievement positions IndianOil as an industry leader and a benchmark for other domestic refiners to scale up SAF production in India. The government's plans to mandate increasing SAF blending in jet fuel (1% in 2027 and 2% in 2028) further emphasize the importance of this certification.

IndianOil's efforts align with India's vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The SAF produced at its Panipat Refinery has undergone rigorous assessment for lifecycle carbon emissions and traceability, setting a benchmark for other domestic refiners and industry players to scale up SAF production.

The ISCC CORSIA Certification, developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), validates that the SAF produced at IndianOil's Panipat Refinery meets the highest international sustainability and lifecycle carbon emission standards. This achievement aligns India's SAF production with international best practices in green aviation, paving the way for a more sustainable future for the aviation sector in India.
