Indian cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi sets a new national record by securing his first win in Youth Test cricket.
In a thrilling display of youthful talent, India Under-19 (India U19) has taken the lead in the ongoing 1st Youth Test against England Under-19 (England U19) at Beckenham. The match has been marked by several noteworthy performances, but the highlight of the day was the debut of Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who at the age of 14 years and 107 days, became the youngest Indian to take a wicket in a Youth Test match.
Suryavanshi, a left-arm orthodox bowler, made his mark by dismissing Hamza Shaikha off the final ball of the 45th over. Shaikha and Rocky Flintoff had earlier put together a formidable partnership of 154 runs, but Suryavanshi's tenacity proved to be the turning point in the match.
India U19's impressive batting performance set the tone for the day. Ayush Mhatre, Abhigyan Kundu, and Rahul Kumar all scored impressive half-centuries, contributing to India U19's total of 540 runs in their first innings.
The previous record for the youngest Indian to take a wicket in a Youth Test match was held by Manishi, who took 5-58 & 2-30 against South Africa in 2019. However, Suryavanshi's achievement at the age of 14 years and 107 days has now taken the spotlight.
Interestingly, Pakistan has also produced several young cricketing prodigies who have made their mark in Youth Test cricket. Shoaib Malik, Hidayatullah Khan, and Hasan Raza are among the Pakistani players who took wickets at a young age. Malik took a wicket at the age of 14 years and 311 days against England in Faisalabad in 1996, while Raza took a wicket at the age of 14 years and 283 days against England in Sheikhupura in 1996. Hidayatullah Khan took a wicket at the age of 13 years and 251 days against Sri Lanka in Colombo (NCC) in 2003.
However, the overall record for the youngest player to take a wicket in a Youth Test match remains with Mahmood Malik of Pakistan, who was 13 years and 241 days old when he took 1-89 against New Zealand in 1994.
As the 1st Youth Test between England U19 and India U19 continues, all eyes will be on Suryavanshi and the rest of the Indian team to see if they can maintain their lead and secure a victory. The match promises to be an exciting display of young talent and is a testament to the future of cricket.
