In an unexpected turn of events, India and Pakistan have come to an agreement on a full and immediate ceasefire. Following a lengthy negotiation period, mediated by the United States, both nations have agreed to cease hostilities.
Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, announced the ceasefire on the digital platform X, stating, "Pakistan and India have agreed to an immediate ceasefire." This decision was also confirmed by Indian officials.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced the approval of a "full and immediate ceasefire" between the two nations. Trump celebrated the decision on his platform Truth Social, praising both countries for their "good sense" and "great intelligence."
However, just hours after the ceasefire, reports of possible violations emerged. Indian government sources claim that Pakistan has breached the bilateral agreement. Journalists from the news agency AFP reported explosions and a power outage in the city of Srinagar, a region within the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir.
"Ruckus everywhere in Srinagar... Where did the ceasefire go?" Omar Abdullah, chief minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, inquired on the X service.
The Conflict's Roots and Recent Escalation
Tensions between India and Pakistan have been mounting in recent days. The latest tensions are mainly attributed to a terrorist attack on April 22, 2025, in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the death of 26 individuals, primarily Indian tourists. New Delhi alleges Pakistan's involvement, while Islamabad denies the accusation and demands an impartial investigation.
The roots of the conflict can be traced back to the colonial period. The British partitioned the Indian subcontinent, giving rise to the predominantly Hindu India and the new Muslim state of Pakistan in 1947. This divisive act continues to foster a bitter rivalry between the two nations, leading to three wars since their independence, two of which centered around the disputed border region of Kashmir.
Following the agreement, the foreign ministers of the G7 countries urged both parties to "immediately de-escalate" and "exercise maximum restraint." US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reached out to both nations, offering the United States' support for a direct dialogue between the nations to resolve the conflict.
