India responds to the dispute over tariffs, asserting a strong stance in the wake of the Trump-Putin meeting, with Prime Minister Modi's remarks highlighted.

India has welcomed the upcoming US-Russia summit scheduled for August 15, 2025, in Alaska, viewing it as a significant opportunity to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and open prospects for peace. The Indian government, through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), issued a statement expressing support for the summit, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision that "this is not an era of war."

The Indian stance reflects the country's strategic interests in maintaining balanced relations with both the US and Russia. Russia, being a key supplier of oil and defense equipment, plays an essential role in India's economy. The summit holds the potential to ease US sanctions on Russia, which have complicated India's trade, particularly energy imports from Russia subjected to US tariffs.

India closely monitors the developments, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar preparing to visit Moscow, signaling active diplomatic engagement. India's consistent position advocates a peaceful settlement of the Russia-Ukraine conflict without escalating confrontations, as reaffirmed by Modi's direct contacts with both Putin and Zelenskyy.

The upcoming summit is a delicate but critical diplomatic juncture that could reduce regional and global tensions, protect India's strategic autonomy, and support energy security while carefully balancing relations with both major powers.

However, the tariff row between the US and India continues to escalate, with Trump imposing a 50 percent tariff on India, attributed to trade with Russia. India has responded to the US tariffs by terming them unfair and citing its own dealings with Moscow. So far, discussions between Trump and Putin over Ukraine have failed to produce a breakthrough.

The meeting will take place in Alaska, amidst Trump mounting pressure on Putin and criticizing India for continuing to do business with Moscow. Despite the challenges, India remains optimistic about the potential for peace and improved relations through diplomatic channels.
