India receives endorsement for their proposal to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has given the green light for India's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG), with Ahmedabad as the leading proposed host city, alongside Bhubaneswar. This decision was made during a Special General Meeting in New Delhi.
The approval marks a significant milestone for India, as it had already submitted an Expression of Interest to host the games. The country now has until August 31, 2025, to file the final bid proposal.
The final decision on the host nation will be made by the General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport in the last week of November 2025, during a meeting in Glasgow.
While specific details on the sports program for the 2030 Games have not been fully disclosed, traditionally, Commonwealth Games include athletics, swimming, hockey, badminton, and others. Both Ahmedabad and Bhubaneswar possess strong sporting infrastructure, which the Commonwealth Sport delegation has recently inspected.
The 2030 CWG will be an inclusive Games, featuring traditional and indigenous sports. However, it will have a pruned roster of sports compared to the 2026 Glasgow edition, with major sports like hockey, badminton, wrestling, and shooting being left out due to cost factors.
The games will be divided into three groups: core sports, sports that the host nation can choose, and additional sports. India aims to include medal-earning sports like shooting, archery, wrestling, and traditional sports like kabaddi and kho kho in the 2030 CWG.
A larger delegation of Commonwealth Sport is expected to visit Ahmedabad later this month to further inspect the venues and meet Gujarat government officials. The 2030 CWG will be a full-fledged Games, featuring all sports that India is good at and has a chance to win maximum medals.
India's chances of hosting the 2030 CWG have potentially improved following Canada's withdrawal from the race. For the latest news updates, you can visit website X, or follow them on Instagram and Facebook.

With the approval of the bid, the nation now embarks on a journey to prepare in full for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The IOA's joint secretary, Kalyan Chaubey, expressed his excitement, stating that preparations will now be made in earnest.
