India omits Verma from Women's Cricket World Cup team selection
Indian Women's Cricket Team Announces World Cup Squad
The Indian women's cricket team has announced its squad for the upcoming ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025, set to begin on September 30. The tournament will be co-hosted by India, with the opener taking place in Bengaluru against Sri Lanka.
Captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, who will be leading the team for the first time in a World Cup, the squad includes some familiar faces such as Smriti Mandhana, Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Renuka Singh Thakur, Arundhati Reddy, Richa Ghosh (wk), Kranti Goud, Amanjot Kaur, Radha Yadav, Shree Charani, Yastika Bhatia, and Sneh Rana.
However, one notable absence from the squad is Shafali Verma, who has scored only one half-century in six innings for India A since her last one-day international in October 2024. Despite this, Neetu David, the women's team chief selector, has not ruled out the possibility of Verma being considered for future selection.
Renuka Singh Thakur, who has been out of action due to a long injury lay-off, has made a comeback to the squad. She is expected to lead India's pace attack in the tournament.
The Indian women's cricket team is aiming to win their first World Cup title in the upcoming tournament. They have previously reached two World Cup finals, but have yet to clinch the coveted trophy.
Before the World Cup, India is set to host Australia in three ODI matches, providing an opportunity for the team to fine-tune their strategies ahead of the big event.
The Indian women's cricket team has had a history of strong performances in the World Cup, reaching the finals in 2017 and 2013. However, they lost both finals to England, with the most recent loss coming by nine runs in 2017.
The team will be hoping to turn their fortunes around in the 13th edition of the World Cup and bring the trophy home. The squad's determination and skill promise an exciting tournament ahead.
