Goa's Iron Ore Mining Resumes After a Decade-Long Hiatus

After a decade-long halt, iron ore mining has resumed in Goa, marking a significant step for the state's economy, according to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. The announcement was made by Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, who assured that the mining activity will recommence in the next six months.

The mining industry in Goa first came to a standstill in 2012 due to illegalities in the sector. The industry partially resumed its operations in 2014 but was shut down again in February 2018 after the Supreme Court quashed 88 mining leases.

Currently, 12 mineral blocks have been auctioned in Goa, out of which 9 are expected to commence operations soon. However, there are 2 to 3 mineral blocks in Goa that are awaiting clearances from the Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has assured to expedite approvals for these blocks.

The resumption of mining will be in accordance with the norms laid down by the Supreme Court. The Union minister did not provide any specific details about the revenue generation or employment opportunities that will result from the resumption of iron ore mining in Goa.

The Coal and Mines Minister held a review meeting in Goa to discuss the status of auctioned mines, plans to auction more mineral blocks, and non-operational mining leases in the coastal state. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant welcomed the Centre's push to revive the mining sector in Goa.

Despite these challenges, Goa has finally resumed mining activities. However, there was concern about the delay in resuming operations, as expressed by the Leader of the Opposition, Yuri Alemao. He estimated significant financial losses due to these delays.

For updated details on specific auctioned mines and exact timelines, it would be beneficial to consult official state or mining industry reports for Goa. The resumption of mining activity in Goa will address issues related to environmental concerns, revenue generation, and employment opportunities.
