"India has fallen under the sway of K-pop, as 'Kimchi Dosa' - a fusion of Korean and Indian cuisine - ignites excitement, mirroring the popularity of South Korean music."
In an exciting fusion of cultures, Korean singer Park Min-jun, known as Aoora, has released the music video for his song "Kimchi Dosa." This innovative track, a collaboration with Indian music producer Dharan Kumar and local artists, reinterprets Indian folk songs in the style of K-pop while touring six cities across India.
The music video, released on August 28, 2023, quickly gained traction, amassing over 1 million views on YouTube within 10 days. The video features a blend of Indian and Korean music and style, with the Korean man dancing with kimchi and an Indian man holding dosa.
Aoora first came to India in 2023, and the idea for the song "Kimchi Dosa" came to him while introducing kimchi to an Indian music producer. Aoora, a longtime fan of dosa, was inspired by the South Indian delicacy and decided to incorporate it into the song's title.
The chorus of the song is "Kimchi Dosa, Kimchi Dosa, Adengappa," with "Adengappa" meaning "Oh my" in Tamil. The catchy tune has been well-received across India, with the music video even being screened before films in some of Mumbai's largest theaters.
Aoora held a fan meeting at a K-beauty expo "BeautySum India" in New Delhi in August 2023. The event unexpectedly drew a large number of fans, further demonstrating the growing interest in K-pop in India.
The K-pop industry is stepping up its foray into India, a vast market that has long remained untapped. Hybe, the K-pop powerhouse behind BTS, has officially announced its entry into India, with a launch targeted for later this year. More Korean companies are turning their attention towards India, ranging from K-beauty to entertainment.
In addition, Aoora is set to film a show next month in collaboration with a local production company. This collaboration continues to solidify Aoora's position as the first K-pop artist active in India. Indian producer Dharan Kumar supported Aoora in the production of the song "Kimchi Dosa," marking a significant step forward in cross-cultural collaborations in the music industry.
The success of "Kimchi Dosa" serves as a testament to the potential for K-pop to resonate with audiences in India and beyond. As the industry continues to expand, we can expect to see more exciting collaborations and innovations in the future.
