India fails to score points in the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships, marking a disappointing end to their two-tournament winning streak.

India's athletes put up a mixed performance at the recently concluded World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, and the previous edition in Budapest. While there were some notable achievements, the country did not manage to secure a single medal in Tokyo.

In the men's 20 km race walk, Caio Bonfim of Brazil clinched the gold medal with a time of 1:18:35, while Paul McGrath of Spain and Wang Zhaozhao of China took the bronze and silver respectively, with times of 1:18:45 and 1:18:43. Servin Sebastian of India finished in 31st place with a time of 1:23:03, and Akshdeep Singh, who holds the Indian national record in the event with a time of 1:19:55, did not participate in the championships.

However, there was some good news for Indian athletes as Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic gold medalist, made history by becoming the first male medalist at the World Para Athletics Championships. He won a silver medal in the javelin throw event in 2021 with a best throw of 88.17 m, and followed it up with a gold medal at the next edition in Budapest. In Tokyo, Chopra finished 8th in the javelin throw event with a best throw of 84.03 m.

Anju Bobby George was the first Indian to claim a medal at the World Para Athletics Championships, winning a bronze in long jump in 2003. Since then, only Chopra has managed to win a medal in any event, with no other Indian athlete having won a gold medal at the World Para Athletics Championships besides Chopra.

India sent a 19-member contingent to the World Athletics Championships to compete in 15 events. Pooja, who secured a career-best timing of 2:01.03 in the women's 800m event, failed to reach the finals. Sarvesh Kushare became the first Indian jumper to qualify for the finals of the World Athletics Championships in his discipline and finished 6th with a personal best timing of 2.28m.

Overall, while India did not manage to secure a medal in the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, the performances of Neeraj Chopra and Sarvesh Kushare provide some encouragement for the future. The country will hope to build on these performances and secure more medals in future editions of the championships.
