India Bolsters Partnership with Mauritius, Strengthening Ties and Aid for Disaster Preparedness

India is deepening its partnership with Mauritius, focusing on various sectors including real estate, smart cities, solar energy, and more. This comes as part of a broader effort to strengthen bilateral relations and provide aid for improving Mauritius' disaster preparedness and response system.

During a successful two-day visit to Port Louis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reinforced India's diplomatic thrust to build better relations with countries in the Indian Ocean arc, including Mauritius. The visit was marked by the PM lauding the Indian community for preserving their cultural roots in Mauritius.

A significant part of this partnership involves the development of a Multi-hazard Emergency System in Mauritius. This system will help with disaster preparedness and response, and will also aid in better weather and climate forecasting in collaboration with ISRO and the ministry of earth sciences.

India will also provide assistance for the launch of an India-Mauritius satellite. Additionally, efforts will be made to improve maritime infrastructure in Wave Rider Buoys in Mauritius.

The expansion of these partnerships offers Mauritius enhanced investment opportunities across diverse and high-growth sectors. It also provides access to advanced technologies and training, especially in oceanographic research and marine resource management.

Improved maritime security through bilateral cooperation and real-time vessel data sharing is another benefit, as is strengthened financial oversight and intelligence cooperation against financial crimes. The strategic positioning of Mauritius as a gateway to Africa and beyond, leveraging its business-friendly environment and preferential market access, is another advantage.

These developments reflect mutual economic growth priorities and a deepening of bilateral cultural and economic ties, supported by strong institutional cooperation and government backing on both sides.

As part of this partnership, India will build the Mauritius parliament building, serving as a concrete symbol of the ties between the two nations. The emotional and spiritual connect between India and Mauritius will be further sustained through exchanges like the Char Dham and Ramayana trail.

India's expertise in various sectors, including space science, satellite technology, primary education, and advanced healthcare, will be made available to Mauritius. This collaboration is seen as a counterbalancing presence against China's pervasive moves to buy influence in the region, a concern that has been expressed by some.

However, there have been concerns about the debt trap that comes along with China's aid. India aims to provide aid in a more open and less cluttered manner, as seen in the high-profile visits to Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Mauritius. The growing faith in offers of collaboration with India's growing expertise in many strategic areas is a testament to this approach.
