India and Indonesia Strengthen Defence Ties in Landmark Security Pact

India and Indonesia have bolstered their defence ties following high-level talks on 1 February. The two nations agreed to deepen cooperation in maritime security, cyber resilience, and joint military readiness. A new committee will also focus on defence industry collaboration, including technology transfers and joint research projects.

During the meeting, Indian Defence Minister held discussions with Indonesian counterpart Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin. Both sides reviewed progress in joint military exercises across the army, navy, and air force. They also reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, and peaceful Indo-Pacific, based on international law and mutual respect for sovereignty.

Maritime security remained a key focus, with plans to improve coordination in the Indian Ocean. Indonesia expressed interest in India’s expertise in submarine development and supply-chain management. The proposed joint defence industry committee aims to align industrial capabilities and support Indonesia’s maritime modernisation efforts.

The ministers also addressed regional stability, emphasising support for a just and lasting peace in West Asia. They agreed to expand officer exchanges, joint training programmes, and visits to defence education institutions. These steps are intended to boost interoperability and knowledge sharing between the two armed forces.

The agreement marks a significant step in India-Indonesia defence relations. The new committee will work on technology transfers, supply-chain strengthening, and joint research. Both nations will also continue enhancing practical cooperation in maritime awareness, cybersecurity, and military readiness.
