Westerland, Germany - Independent candidate Tina Haltermann emerged victorious in the runoff election for Sylt's Mayor's Office, besting local voters' association "Die Insulaner" candidate Markus Gieppner. Haltermann secured 55.6 percent of the votes, while Gieppner trailed with 44.4 percent, according to preliminary results.

The election followed the recall of former Mayor Jens Häckel, who passed away after a string of controversies surrounding his position. The vacancy in the Mayoral post led to the first round of elections on March 16, 2025, where Haltermann garnered 38.4 percent of the votes, and Gieppner 23.5 percent. Neither candidate obtained the required majority for an outright victory, necessitating the runoff election held on April 6.

Tina Haltermann's ascent to power comes amidst a complex recent history. Previously, Nikolas Häckel, the former Mayor of Sylt, was recalled in September 2024 following extended drama over his leadership. Having been unwell for months, Häckel passed away in November 2024. Carsten Kerkamm (CDU) served as interim leader to stabilize the commune's administration during this period.

In the backdrop of this historical context, Haltermann's participation in the runoff election was crucial in determining the future of the Gemeinde Sylt's leadership. As the newly elected Mayor, Haltermann will now guide the island community through its continued growth and challenges.
