Independence Day Celebration: A Look at Whether It's the 78th or 79th Year

The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, has extended an invitation to all citizens to share their thoughts and ideas for his address on the occasion of India's 79th Independence Day, to be celebrated on August 15, 2025, at the Red Fort.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has confirmed that India will be celebrating its 79th Independence Day, marking the anniversary of its independence from British colonial rule on August 15, 1947. The celebration is a traditional part of India's Independence Day festivities, during which the Prime Minister hoists the tricolour flag, the national anthem is sung, and the Prime Minister delivers an address to the nation.

In a letter, the Prime Minister invited citizens to share their thoughts and ideas for his Independence Day address on the Open Forums on MyGov and the NaMo App. This invitation is a new development in the lead-up to the celebration and presents an opportunity for citizens to participate in the celebration and contribute to the national discourse.

As part of the Independence Day celebrations, cultural programs and seminars are organized to pay tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom. The day is remembered for the freedom fighters and the common Indians who coalesced together to snatch back the country from the Britishers.

The debate over whether to count India's Independence Day from August 15, 1947, or August 15, 1948, has resurfaced. However, it is important to note that India's Independence Day is counted from the day of independence itself, August 15, 1947, which is considered the 1st Independence Day. Therefore, in 2025, India will observe its 79th Independence Day on August 15, not the 78th, because the count includes the initial day in 1947 as the 1st celebration.

The day is observed annually on August 15 with flag hoisting, speeches, cultural events, and various official ceremonies. The Independence Day of India is a national holiday that commemorates the country's independence from British colonial rule on August 15, 1947.

The confirmation of India's 79th Independence Day celebration was carried by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). Cultural programs and seminars are organized to pay tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom.
