Yacht Recovery on Hold After Diver's Tragic Demise

Indefinite Suspension of 'Bayesian' Recuperation

The recovery of the titanic yacht "Bayesian," touted as "unsinkable" until a tempestuous storm proved otherwise, now faces an indefinite delay following a diver's untimely demise. The British firm TMC Marine, spearheading the operation, has ceased operations to investigate the reasons behind the diver's fate. The Dutch diver, aged 39, was discovered lifeless following a dive on a Friday.

Authorities are hoping an autopsy will deliver the answers they seek, with initial suspicions pointing towards a heart attack or a malfunctioning oxygen tank. However, Italian news agency Ansa reports that there may be evidence suggesting the diver encountered a metallic object while operating a cutting torch.

Challenging Recovery Process Amidst Tragedy

The sinking of the 56-meter yacht off the Italian Mediterranean island garnered worldwide headlines last summer. Seven lives were extinguished. The "Bayesian" lies about 50 meters deep on the ocean floor, approximately a kilometer from the shore. The recovery process is a formidable task, with an estimated cost in the millions of euros.

Multiple Theories Surrounding the Disaster

The "unsinkable" yacht succumbed to the turbulent sea in mid-August off the small port of Porticello on the north coast within just 15 minutes during a storm. Among the fallen were British software billionaire Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, two couples, and the ship's cook. Except for the cook, the entire crew miraculously managed to escape. In total, 15 crew members and guests made it through the ordeal.

Various theories flood the airwaves about the catastrophe's cause, even involving international intelligence agencies. Lynch was known to maintain connections with various spy networks through one of his companies. However, current official investigations are primarily focusing on the captain and two other crew members, who are under scrutiny for apparently disregarding storm warnings and prioritizing their own safety.

The "Bayesian," weighing an impressive 473 tons, was one of the most significant sailing yachts globally. Underwater camera footage reveals the vessel remains relatively intact on the right side on the seabed. The recovery operation has been delayed several times before and was recently reported to be completed by mid-June.
