Sherrod Brown Announces 2026 Senate Bid, Aims to Take on Husted

Former Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown has announced his intention to run for his old Senate seat in 2026, challenging incumbent Republican Jon Husted who was appointed to the position eight months ago.

Brown, who served in the Senate for 18 years before losing his re-election bid in 2024, is emphasizing his working-class appeal and commitment to being a distinct voice for Ohio. His decision to run comes amidst a potential backlash to Trump's administration, which could boost Democratic candidates across the country.

Brown's comeback bid may face competitive yet challenging odds. Ohio, traditionally a Republican-leaning state, supported Trump by over 10 points in the 2024 presidential election. Husted, the Republican incumbent by appointment, has strong statewide experience, having served as lieutenant governor, secretary of state, and speaker of the Ohio House.

However, Brown narrowly lost his 2024 reelection attempt by less than four points, suggesting that his strong working-class brand and name recognition remain significant assets. Brown is positioning himself as a champion for Ohio workers and against "radical liberal policies" cited by a Husted campaign spokesman.

The 2026 race is expected to be closely contested, but precise odds require polling closer to the election date, which current sources do not provide. It's worth noting that successful comeback Senate campaigns are rare, with the last one occurring in 2002 in New Jersey.

In preparation for his comeback bid, Brown is currently interviewing Senate campaign managers and has launched the Dignity of Work Institute, an organization focused on reducing the cost of living for working-class voters. Husted was appointed by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to fill the seat vacated by J.D. Vance, who was elected as Donald Trump's vice president.

Republicans are currently facing a potentially unpopular policy agenda, focusing on slashing Medicaid health insurance and cutting taxes for the wealthy. Democrats are facing an uphill battle in Ohio, but Brown's announcement has stirred excitement among Ohio Democrats who see him as a formidable challenger to Husted.

As the 2026 election approaches, both parties will be closely watching this race to see if Brown can successfully reclaim his Senate seat.
