Tired of shoplifting and burglary ruining the peace? Denmark's lawmakers have your back! By a majority vote on Thursday, the parliament decided to crack down on unscrupulous activities such as shoplifting and hawking stolen goods. First-time offenders will now face a minimum fine of 1,000 kroner.
"Enough is enough!" said Peter Hummelgaard, Denmark's Minister of Justice. "Recent years have seen a concerning increase in shoplifting incidents across the nation, and it's high time we took action."
"Now, we're not just talking about tightening the noose on shoplifting. With these new measures, we're also bolstering our fight against bike thieves," Hummelgaard continued.

In addition to these measures, the new law will empower police officers to conduct spot checks on cyclists. This means they can stop a cyclist without prior cause to confirm whether the bike they're using is reported stolen.
Parties from across the political spectrum, with the exception of the Red-Green Alliance, the Alternative party, and the abstaining Liberal Alliance, supported the new measures alongside the government.
So, grab your bikes and grips, Danes! Tougher times are here for shoplifters and bike thieves—and that's a steal!
