Vibrant Renewal: Enhanced Security and New Attractions at Munich's NS Documentation Center

Enhanced Security Measures and Fresh Exhibits at NS Documentation Center in Munich - Increased security measures and additional amenities at the NS-Docentrum München.

After the unsettling terrorist attack in September, the NS Documentation Center in Munich takes a monumental step forward with enhanced security and captivating new features. And, just in time for its tenth anniversary, the museum now bears the theme "History is not the Past".

A Safer Sanctuary

With the tragedies in mind, the museum has undergone a thoughtful renovation to boost its protective measures. Highlights of the upgrades include a fresh entrance design, top-notch video surveillance, and strategic bollards adorning the building's front.

The premises have been closed for approximately five months to make way for these additions, all of which are elements of the renovation project directed by Mirjam Zadoff, the museum's director.

Space for Dialogue and Engagement

Once again welcoming visitors, the revamped NS Documentation Center prides itself on creating an environment conducive for discussions, inspired exploration, and meaningful exchange. The entrance area boasts an innovative new café and a multitude of seating areas to encourage active engagement among guests.

integration of contemporary events - such as a provocative video installation - is intended to remind us of the pervasive nature of right-wing extremism, racism, and antisemitism in Munich from 1970 to 2016.

Exhibitions and Collections Revitalized

For the first time, 22 historical artifacts are displayed in the center's permanent exhibition for a special exhibition titled "Memory is...". At each station, the poignant stories behind the objects come to life, inviting visitors to delve deeper. Showcased items range from Nazi party badges and orders to a puppet from the Munich Jewish Artists Marionette Theater and an enamel tin from a concentration camp satellite camp.

One moving exhibit features the embroidery of resistance fighter Lies Bueninck from the Netherlands. As a testament to her courage, her work has survived the test of time and now shares a stirring tale of her act of defiance and resilience. Despite imprisonment for harboring a Jewish family, and subsequent imprisonment in a satellite camp of the Dachau concentration camp, Bueninck remained steadfast and was eventually liberated by the Allies.

Historic Ties to the City of Munich

In the infamous incident that occurred on September 5, 2024, an 18-year-old attempted to devastate the Israeli consulate and the nearby NS Documentation Center with gunfire. After exchanging fire with the police, the perpetrator, an Austrian national, succumbed to his injuries. The attack was later classified as a terrorist act against Israel by the investigators, who cited the young man's efforts to strike at other buildings as well owing to "orientation difficulties".

Munich Stands Strong

With renewed security measures in place, the NS Documentation Center remains steadfast in its commitment to memorializing and educating visitors about the history of National Socialism and its lasting impact. As the center forges ahead, it continues to serve as an essential historical and educational resource in Munich, prepared to face whatever challenges the future may hold.
