Let's talk about the surge in Saxony's medical community! Last year, a whopping 487 more doctors joined the ranks, bringing the total to a staggering 20,180 out of 27,724 residing in the state by the end of 2024.
According to the Saxon State Chamber of Physicians, around 11,500 work within hospitals, approximately 7,600 focus on outpatient care, and 362 serve in public administration. With over 11,034 female and 9,146 male doctors, females account for approximately 54.7% of the workforce.
The shift towards employment rather than self-employment has been evident. In 2015, there were 5,442 self-employed doctors, compared to the current 4,846, a decrease of over 10%. On the other hand, the number of employees has steadily increased, with an additional 279 in 2024, bringing the total to 2,790.
Chamber President Erik Bodendieck acknowledges the desire for a better work-life balance and predictable working hours. However, he shares concerns about the challenging replacement of doctors in rural areas. He explains, "Foreign doctors continue to immigrate and ensure supply in multiple facilities."
Interestingly, the Saxon State Chamber of Physicians has registered 3,486 foreign doctors from 109 countries, most of them hailing from Syria and Eastern European nations, ranging from Bulgaria to Ukraine. Approximately 2,690 work in hospitals, 441 in outpatient care, and 113 in other facilities. The foreign workforce's share in the medical profession comes in at 17.3%.
