A threefold fatal knife attack occurred at an urban celebration in Solingen (North Rhine-Westphalia) on a Friday evening. The suspect, a 26-year-old individual from Syria, is currently in custody. Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the atrocity.
Saxony's Interior Minister, Armin Schuster (CDU), previously advocated for reinforced border checks and unwavering deportations in the "Saxon Newspaper," suggesting measures like deportation flights to Syria and Afghanistan. This act of violence also stirred up discussions about stricter knife carrying regulations.
Knife attacks on the rise in Saxony
According to the State Criminal Police Office (LKA), the number of knife attacks in the region has skyrocketed. In 2023, a staggering 1373 knife-related incidents were reported - a 21.9% increase compared to 2022. Last year, 77 individuals suffered severe injuries, and 14 lost their lives due to knife attacks in Saxony.
Of the approximately 1200 suspects, an alarming 49.2% weren't German citizens, primarily hailing from Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, Tunisia, and Iraq.
The Commission, comprising representatives from federal and state governments, is due to meet to discuss the rising knife incidents and the recent tragic attack in Solingen. In response to the increased threat scenario, The Commission is planning to propose updated safety protocols for major events to the Interior Ministry.
Saxony's new safety measures remain undisclosed, but following recent violent incidents like the Magdeburg Christmas Market Attack and Aschaffenburg Knife Attack, authorities are under scrutiny to improve communication and coordination, enhance security protocols, and conduct more thorough investigations.
