In the wake of increased political tension and threats against public officials, lawmakers are set to discuss increased security spending when they return to Washington this week. This comes following the tragic killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, which has sparked a surge in concerns about safety.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, has stated that sharp political attacks do not necessarily constitute calls for violence. However, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has expressed concern about the growing political tension among lawmakers. Johnson's remarks do not specify whom he is directly addressing, but he attributes some of the tension to heated political rhetoric.

The political grouping that has repeatedly used the term 'fascist' against former U.S. President Donald Trump in recent years is the political left, including left-wing activists and groups such as the Democratic Socialists of America. They have labeled Trump a fascist due to his policies and rhetoric. Trump, while campaigning for a second term, used the term 'fascist' to attack political opponents. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., has also used the term 'fascist' to describe her political opponents.

In response to the surge in threats, the Trump administration has asked Congress to approve $58 million in emergency funding for Supreme Court security. The funding request is in response to a surge in threats against public officials following the killing of Charlie Kirk. The money is intended for the U.S. Marshals Service to cover additional protective operations for the Supreme Court justices.

The administration also urged Congress to consider adding additional resources for the Capitol Police and other security measures. Security for lawmakers has undergone significant changes since the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. An overhaul of the Capitol Police's authority allowed it to obtain new equipment and broaden its capabilities to protect lawmakers outside of Washington.

Unfortunately, incidents of threats to the homes and district offices of members have persisted. A notable example is the man who was arrested for breaking into Rep. Nancy Pelosi's home in San Francisco and attacking her husband in 2022. Another man was arrested in January for entering the Capitol and Library of Congress with a concealed handgun.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris and other lawmakers have repeatedly used the term 'fascist' to criticize Trump. However, Crockett's statement was made in response to the killing of Charlie Kirk, emphasizing the need for a civil and respectful political discourse to maintain safety and security for all public officials. Johnson warns that deranged individuals may interpret such rhetoric as a call to action, highlighting the importance of careful and considerate language in political debates.
