Cherries Cost a Pretty Penny at Krasnodar Markets: Up to 700 Rubles Per Kilo!

Increased frequency of spring frosts leads to twofold rise in cherry costs within Krasnodar region.

Spring is here and so are the cherries in Krasnodar, only this year, they're not so cheap. After spring frosts wiped out half of the crop, prices for Kuban's sweet berries have skyrocketed. We took a trip to the bustling Sennoy Market to check out the high prices and sample the local treats.

The cherry season usually starts in June, but farmers are predicting a dismal harvest of just 1,000 tons this year, double the cost from last year's average of 300-350 rubles. Armenian cherries, if you can find them, will set you back an eye-watering 800-1,000 rubles per kilo.

That's not all! Strawberries are going for 850-1,100 rubles per kilo, blueberries cost a whopping 2,500 rubles per kilo, and strawberries are a more manageable 220-300 rubles per kilo.

But that's not the whole story. In the past decade, the Kuban region has seen a sixfold increase in state support for viticulture and winemaking, accounting for nearly half of all wine and over half of all sparkling wine produced in the country. In the past ten years, the area of vineyards has expanded, seedling production has increased, and sparkling wine production has grown exponentially. Keep an eye out for a record harvest of 250,000 tons of grapes in 2025!

As for the cherries, with weather conditions like those predicted for this year - abnormally hot temperatures, drought, and the potential for unpredictable rainfall - it's anyone's guess how the harvest will fare. Cherries are sensitive to extreme weather, and high temperatures, drought, or excessive rain could lead to lower yields or spoilage.

So, if you're in the market for some sweet, juicy cherries this year, be prepared to open your wallet wide!

The high prices at Krasnodar markets for cherries, food-and-drink items, are a result of this year's crop being affected by spring frosts, which have caused a significant increase in their cost. With the predicted extreme weather conditions, including abnormally hot temperatures, drought, and unpredictable rainfall, the lifestyle choice of enjoying a variety of delicious fruits, such as cherries, may come with a hefty price tag this year.
