Increased earnings might lead to an extra World Pool day at Glorious Goodwood in the upcoming year
Goodwood's Glorious Goodwood Event Breaks Records with Highest Ever World Pool Turnover
The second day of this year's Glorious Goodwood event has made history, recording the highest ever World Pool turnover. The event, held at the picturesque Goodwood Racecourse in West Sussex, saw a staggering HK$793.2 million (£76m) wagered through the World Pool, marking an almost 11% increase from the previous year.
This significant surge in turnover has caught the attention of the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), who are considering expanding the availability of the World Pool in response to the increased engagement of punters. James Crespi, racecourse director at Goodwood, has praised the continued growth of the World Pool, stating that it highlights its strength and importance for horseracing.
The World Pool, operated by the Tote in Britain, was available at Glorious Goodwood for the fifth consecutive year. The pool provides a stronger platform for the range of bets offered at the event, enabling reinvestment and ensuring a competitive race program at Goodwood. The increased turnover has also boosted prize-money for the Group 2 York Stakes, with an additional £40,000 added to the World Pool schedule.
Overall, the World Pool provided additional race sponsorship over three days at Glorious Goodwood. Thursday's Nassau Stakes card saw the most engagement with punters, with HK$270.8m (£25.95m) bet into the World Pool pools. Despite the biblical rainfall at the event, the World Pool turnover still saw an increase, demonstrating its resilience and popularity among punters.
The HKJC has proposed that the first four days of next year's Glorious Goodwood should be open to the World Pool, pending government approval. However, as of now, no indication of extending the World Pool days at Goodwood in 2026 has been reported.
