At Hamburg's Burchardkai container port, the future of cargo transport is here – at least, by 2025's end. Our critics might scoff, but Angela Titzrath, the CEO of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), has announced that by then, 116 AGVs from Konecranes will replace the existing automated portal hub vehicles.

These AGVs, or autonomous guided vehicles, will roll in and haul containers once they've been hoisted by robust container cranes. So long, diesel-electric portal hub vehicles! The switch will wipe out around 12,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. That's a slice of the 25,000 tonnes HHLA aims to slice off their carbon footprint by 2030.
