Pedaling Past the Past: E-Bikes Lead the Pack in Germany's Two-Wheeler Market
New Bicycles: Electric Bikes Outselling Traditional Bicycles During New Purchases - Increased Demand: E-bikes Outpacing Conventional Bicycles in Sales.
Here's the skinny: Last year, Germany saw a whopping 3.85 million new bicycles roll out, but here's the twist—2.05 million of those were e-bikes, leaving traditional bikes in the dust with 1.8 million sales. This downturn amounted to a 2.53% slump compared to the previous year, and the industry's income took a hit too. In 2024, the turnover dropped to 6.33 billion euros, down from 7.06 billion the year before. But don't worry, this dip is nothing compared to the high of four billion euros in 2019.
If you recall, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the bicycle market experienced a surge. Manufacturers upped their production in response to the boom, leading to overflowing inventories that are still hanging around. The ZIV predicts the market to level out by 2026.
Currently, production numbers are reflecting the excess stock. In 2024, about 1.33 million e-bikes were churned out in Germany, down 14.8% from the previous year. Conventional bicycles saw a 11.7% decrease, with only approximately 641,000 units produced. The ZIV considers this drop "relatively modest" considering the overall economic slump in Germany. "The e-bike," the ZIV declared, "continues to anchor German-made bicycle production."
The average retail price for traditional bicycles jumped to 500 euros in 2024, marking a 30 euro increase from the previous year. On the other hand, e-bikes saw a price drop thanks to retail discounts—their average price dipped to 2650 euros, down from 2950 euros in 2023.
So, how about the German bike population? It's growing, as you might've guessed. The count climbed from 84 million to 89 million in the last year. Among these, e-bikes made up a whopping 15.7 million.
