Solingen's Rising Crime: A City in Contention

Increased Crime Rates in Solingen: CDU Harshly Condemns the Coalition of CDU, SPD, and Greens, and the Ombudsman for Insufficient Crime Prevention Measures

Political tensions are stirring in Solingen as the recent crime statistics for 2024 spark concern and disagreement. Although the overall crime figure has seen a slight decrease, an uptick in violence and sexual offenses has become a cause for alarm. The CDU city council is calling for decisive action to tackle the escalating issue.

A Sharp Increase in Violence and Sexual Offenses

According to the records, violent crimes in Solingen have risen by 11.3%. The most alarming aspect is the surge in sexual offenses, with the city recording a staggering 17.4% increase. The number of cases involving bodily harm has reached an all-time high of 1,474 incidents. This trend, according to the CDU, is not a short-lived phenomenon but a long-term concern.

Rafael Sarlak, a city council member and police committee member, sheds light on the issue:

CDU: The City has Become Less Safe

The CDU attributes the increasing insecurity to the city's leadership, particularly Mayor Tim Kurzbach (SPD) and the red-green majority. Despite repeated warnings, they argue, the city has yet to present an effective strategy to combat crime. "Solingen has become less safe under the leadership of Tim Kurzbach and red-green," asserts Sarlak. City politics, the CDU claims, remains oblivious to the rising threat.

A contentious issue is the high proportion of non-German suspects. While the non-German population constitutes 19.1% of the city, they make up 35.9% of the suspects. "This reality demands an objective analysis and effective measures in areas like integration and law enforcement, instead of being ignored," emphasizes Sarlak.

Call for Stronger Law Enforcement and Prevention

The CDU now seeks additional community orderlies, closer cooperation with the police, and increased presence in high-crime areas. "We continue to propose collaborating with all democratic factions to develop a comprehensive security plan," explains CDU faction leader Daniel Flemm. The CDU's proposal encompasses repressive measures, as well as preventive and integrative approaches, and urban planning concepts to make Solingen safer again.

"Solingen must become safer once more - and that requires bold political initiative. The CDU stands ready to assume responsibility," says Flemm in conclusion.

In the context of the rising crime rates in Solingen, Rafael Sarlak, a city council member and police committee member, revealed a significant increase in violent crime, sexual offenses, and bodily harm since 2014. He underscored that these figures are not temporary but a long-term concern for the city.

As a response, the CDU faction leader, Daniel Flemm, proposed stronger law enforcement, closer cooperation with the police, increased presence in high-crime areas, and collaboration with all democratic factions to develop a comprehensive security plan that encompasses repressive measures, preventive and integrative approaches, and urban planning concepts to make Solingen safer again.
