In recent developments, the Russian economy continues to face a barrage of sanctions, with the latest proposals coming from the Trump administration. According to reports, the U.S. President has suggested imposing new sanctions targeting Russian energy supplies, aiming to pressure the European Union to halt the import of Russian oil and gas.

The senators, including Elizabeth Warren, Sheldon Whitehouse, Christopher Coons, Chris Van Hollen, and four other Democrats, have urged the Trump administration to reinstate targeted sanctions on Russian energy supplies. They believe that lifting sanctions sends a signal to other potential buyers that they can purchase Russian energy resources without consequences.

However, the Russian economy, under a "huge amount of sanctions," as stated by Dmitry Peskov, Russian President's press secretary, has developed a certain "immunity" to these sanctions, according to the same source. Moscow, in response, considers Western sanctions against Russia as illegal, as Peskov has asserted.

The senators' proposed sanctions would aim to increase economic pressure on Russia's war economy. If approved, these sanctions would potentially raise energy prices in Europe by reducing Russian energy imports and thereby constraining Moscow's war financing.

Meanwhile, Trump has proposed that the lifting of the proposed sanctions would occur after the end of hostilities. He has also expressed his readiness to impose massive sanctions on Russia if all NATO countries stop buying Russian oil.

In a different turn of events, Trump imposed additional 25% tariffs on Indian imports due to the purchase of Russian oil. This move is in line with his proposed sanctions against Russia, which include secondary sanctions against China and India and a complete halt of Russian oil purchases.

Trump's proposed sanctions against Russia, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, also include targeting the Russian Arctic LNG-2 project for natural gas production and liquefaction. The senators have asked for a response to their letter by October 1, including whether the Trump administration is preparing new sanctions against this project.

However, since the start of his second term, the Republican has not imposed new sanctions on Russian energy companies, a fact that has raised suspicions among several European countries. They suspect that Trump has proposed unfeasible conditions for imposing sanctions against Russia to avoid restrictions.

Reuters reports that Trump has repeatedly expressed disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin's inability to reach a peaceful agreement with Ukraine. Despite this, Trump has not yet taken significant steps to impose new sanctions on Russia's energy sector, leaving the future of these proposed sanctions uncertain.
