Increase in the number of citizenship acquisitions reaches a new peak
Record-Breaking Citizenships in Germany: 250,000 Newcomers in 2023
In a remarkable leap, Germany witnessed an unprecedented number of new citizens last year when 249,901 individuals were granted German nationality, according to a survey by "Die Welt am Sonntag." This record-breaking figure surpassed the previous high of 200,095 citizenships granted nationwide in 2023.
The surge in new citizens can be attributed to several factors, including the liberalization of citizenship laws and a fast-track naturalization option introduced by the previous government. Well-integrated migrants were able to gain citizenship after just three years of residency, a policy that facilitated integration and addressed labor shortages.
Although individual states have provided partial and provisional data, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Schleswig-Holstein have yet to disclose their total numbers. Several other states, however, have already released their figures in recent days.
The current government, a coalition of Union and SPD, plans to revise the citizenship law, aiming to reverse the accelerated citizenship process introduced by the previous administration. The goal is to ensure that citizenship is granted only after full integration into German society. This move represents a shift towards a more cautious approach to immigration, with an emphasis on integration before obtaining citizenship.
The move also entails stricter citizenship requirements and the abolition of the fast-track naturalization option. The Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, has pointed out that three years might be insufficient for integration. Alongside citizenship reforms, Germany is also implementing measures to restrict family reunifications and tighten overall immigration rules to curb irregular immigration.
Helmut Dedy, the main executive of the German Cities Association, informed "Die Welt am Sonntag" that many individuals who came during the large refugee movements in 2015 and 2016 are now applying for or have already obtained German citizenship. The previous requirement to renounce one's original citizenship has also been relaxed in certain cases, which has likely contributed to the increase in applications for German citizenship.

- The surge in new citizenships in Germany, as reported in 2023, is not only a result of the liberalized employment policy but also a reflection of migration trends and the politics surrounding immigration.
- The recent increase in applicants for German citizenship, particularly from individuals who came during the refugee movements in 2015 and 2016, can be attributed to changes in community policy, such as the relaxation of the renunciation of original citizenship requirement, and the introduction of a fast-track naturalization option, which has since been proposed to be revised.
