The wildfires ravaging California have been described as the worst in the state's history by US President Joe Biden. The fires have caused widespread devastation, with the largest, the Palisades Fire, burning over 8,000 hectares of land. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna compared the devastation to a nuclear bomb being dropped.

The Eaton Fire, near Pasadena, has grown to over 5,500 hectares and is currently at zero percent containment. It has destroyed or damaged about 4,000 to 5,000 buildings, according to reports. The Eaton Fire has also claimed at least ten lives, as reported by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office.

More than 5,300 houses have burned in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood since Tuesday, with thick smoke hanging over the city and many people wearing masks to protect themselves from harmful particles. At least 360,000 people have been evacuated from the most affected areas.

Famous personalities like Paris Hilton and Bill Kaulitz, singer of Tokio Hotel, have also been affected, watching on TV as their homes in Malibu and Hidden Hills burned.

The scheduled NFL playoff game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Minnesota Vikings has been moved to Arizona due to concerns about air quality and the burden on police and firefighters. Schools in the area are closed today due to poor air quality.

Kathryn Barger of the Los Angeles County administration called the looters "opportunists" and threatened to implement curfews. At least 20 suspects have been arrested in connection with looting during the wildfires.

In a new development, a new fire, the Kenneth Fire, broke out in the West Hills and Hidden Hills area, moving towards residential homes.

The wildfires have had a significant impact on the local population, with a new study released in early August 2025 indicating that the fires have resulted in over 400 additional deaths. The total mortality linked to the fires has increased significantly due to subsequent factors.

Rebuilding efforts are ongoing, with an executive order signed by Governor Newsom on July 7, 2025, suspending mandatory rooftop solar and battery storage installations for homes lost in January wildfires, though homes must remain solar-ready.
