A Rise in Traffic Violations by Diplomatic Vehicles in Berlin
Last year, Berlin recorded a staggering 18,288 traffic violations linked to vehicles bearing diplomatic license plates. Offenses ranging from speeding to hit-and-runs were reported, yet drivers remain immune from prosecution due to their diplomatic status.
As of today, approximately 2,500 diplomatic vehicles reside in Berlin, with the United States leading the pack, boasting 230 cars, followed closely by Russia with 150 and China with 120. However, it seems that Saudi Arabian diplomats topped last year's list of the most lawless road users, committing 1,225 traffic violations, surpassed only by their American counterparts with 1,162. Iraqi, Turkish, and Azerbaijani diplomats followed suit.
In 2024, the number of traffic violations by diplomatic vehicles increased by ten percent compared to 2023, according to Berlin police. This rise led to a total of 48 traffic accidents involving diplomatic vehicles, resulting in 19 injuries and one fatality. Ominously, in more than half of these accidents, drivers fled the scene – an offense that is criminal, but excused by their diplomatic immunity.
In 2017, a tragic incident happened in Neukölln, where a cyclist lost his life after a Saudi diplomat opened his Porsche’s door directly into the cyclist's path. The 55-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries.
While the reasons behind the increasing number of traffic violations by diplomatic vehicles remain poorly understood, diplomatic immunity, lack of enforcement, and cultural differences are among the possible contributing factors. Regardless, it is crucial for host countries like Germany to ensure diplomatic vehicles abide by local traffic laws to maintain public safety.
