Incoming News: Departure of Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Being Planed for Trip to South Korea's Busan

In an upcoming visit, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is scheduled to travel to the South Korean city of Busan on April 24, 2024. This will mark his first official visit to South Korea since taking office in October 2024.

The discussions between the Japanese and South Korean governments, initiated by Prime Minister Ishiba and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, will focus on addressing shared challenges such as overconcentration in metropolitan areas and declining populations in regional areas.

The exact details of the discussions are not specified, but the meeting is expected to bolster cooperation between the two countries to resolve these shared issues. This will be the second official meeting between the two leaders since Prime Minister Ishiba's first visit to South Korea.

Prime Minister Ishiba, who is the president of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, announced his decision to quit, and the LDP is scheduled to hold an election to pick a new party chief on Oct. 4. However, this visit is not the first official interaction between the two governments, but it is significant as it is Ishiba's first visit to South Korea.

The Japanese and South Korean governments are working to arrange the visit, which is taking place in the context of ongoing diplomatic relations between the two countries. President Lee Jae-myung expressed a desire to hold his next meeting with Prime Minister Ishiba in a regional area in South Korea during their meeting in Tokyo on Aug. 23.

The trip will be Prime Minister Ishiba's last overseas trip before his resignation, making it all the more important for both countries to discuss and find solutions to their shared challenges. The upcoming meeting between the two leaders will likely aim to address these issues and mark another official interaction between the two governments.
