Incoming German diplomacy leader commits to continued backing of Ukraine

In a recent interview with Deutsche Welle, the German Foreign Minister-designate, Johann Wadephul, assured continuity in Berlin's support for Ukraine. Regardless of who takes the Chancellor's seat, Wadephul emphasized that Ukraine can count on Germany's backing.

"It's crucial that everyone—especially Vladimir Putin—understands, we're standing with Ukraine," Wadephul shared. The German government has been providing significant military aid, reaching an impressive €28 billion ($32 billion) since the Russian invasion in 2022.

While current Chancellor Olaf Scholz blocked the delivery of Taurus missiles due to escalation concerns, Merz—who is expected to take office soon—has expressed support for their dispatch in coordination with allies.

Ignoring rumors about official appointments, it's too early to confirm if Wadephul and Merz will assume pivotal roles in the German leadership. Notably, Annalena Baerbock is the current Foreign Minister.

Wadephul also highlighted that Germany will not forge special relations with Moscow, contradicting the U.S. President Trump's policy shift. Instead, Germany will collaborate with its European partners, including the U.S., to bolster Ukraine's military strength within the European Community.

Germany has already provided various military resources to Ukraine, like the IRIS-T air defense systems, Patriot missiles, Marder infantry fighting vehicles, and Leopard tanks. In addition, over 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers have undergone military training in Germany.

As NATO and EU members, Germany maintains a firm stance against Russia's actions in Ukraine while keeping open communication with the U.S. The latest funding package might not include U.S. contributions, but Germany continues to work within NATO to support Ukraine, insisting on a united Western front against Russia's aggression.

  1. "Johann Wadephul, the German Foreign Minister-designate, stressed that Ukraine can anticipate continued support from Germany, irrespective of who assumes the Chancellor's seat."
  2. "In the interview, Wadephul promised that Germany would maintain a united front against Russia's actions in Ukraine, with a focus on strengthening Ukraine's military capabilities."
  3. "Furthermore, the candidate for the Chancellor seat, Merz, has conveyed his support for sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine, a move previously blocked by the incumbent Chancellor."
  4. "Germany's efforts to support Ukraine extend beyond military aid, as over 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers have received military training in Germany, according to recent general news reports."
German Foreign Minister-designate Johann Wadephul asserted that it should be evident to everyone, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, that Germany will stand in solidarity with Ukraine. He stated that Germany intends to provide support to Ukraine and offer it a chance to equal Russia.
